The Online Safety Bill:

  • Online Safety Bill - The Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport has announced that the Online Safety Bill has been introduced in Parliament, the first step in its passage to become law in the UK. The Bill will include the new offence of cyberflashing in England and Wales and introduce a legal requirement for UK companies to report child sexual abuse content on their platforms to the National Crime Agency. Social Media:

  • A social media murder: Olly's story - Social media harms - The BBC has released a new Panorama episode which explores the potential dangers around social media.
  • There is further advice for young people at yourpolice.uk on Instagram
  • The BBC has published details of a coroner’s recommendations, following the inquest into the death of Molly Russell, calling for online safety action from social media firms and the UK government. For more information go here.

Education Resources:

  • The internet, relationships & you: Toolkit for 11-18s - This toolkit helps you to transform our website for 11 – 18s Thinkuknow.co.uk/11_18 from a reference tool into an engaging resource. It contains activities suitable for use in schools, youth work and other educational settings.
  • Staying safe online - Northumbria Police have released a range of resources designed for KS2 and KS3 pupils. All schools have received the resources but they can be used by practitioners working with children and young people
  • Report indecent and inappropriate images to the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF).

  • Harmful Online Challenges and Hoaxes -  The Department for Education (DfE), UK Council for Internet Safety Education and Samaritans have developed advice for schools to support their approach to harmful online challenges and online hoaxes.

Online Safety:

  • Online Sexual Harm Reduction Guide - The Marie Collins Foundation has joined forces with the NWG Network to produce this help guide aimed at reducing online harm
  • Online Safety - It's not about the internet - Jim Gamble's Ted Talk considers the nature of the online threat including the nature of the beast, the suggestion that blaming tech companies is too simplistic, the importance of individual leadership and simple ideas that can make us all safer. Jim Gamble is a former senior police officer and a renowned child protection expert. He is the CEO and one of the founding partners of the Ineqe Group, the largest independent safeguarding organisation in the UK and Ireland. Jim is a frequent media commentator on issues related to protective services, best practice, the internet and child protection.
